Places to visit in Jamnagar

The magnificent Pratap Vilas Palace is a must visit place. Its European architecture with Indian carvings gives it a distinct indentity. It was built by keeping in mind the Victoria Memorial of Kolkata. 

With so many parks and sanctuaries, there are lots of activities that you can opt for in Jamnagar. Bird watching is one of the most popular among them. You can also capture the mesmerising natural beauty of the place in your camera. 

Darbargadh reflects the fusion of Rajput and European styles of architecture. The semi-circular palace complex consists of a number of buildings with very fine architectural features and detailing. It has some fine examples of stone carvings, wall paintings, ornamental mirrors, fretwork jali-screens, carved pillars and sculpture. The walls outside have carved jarokha balconies in the Indian tradition, a carved gate and Venetian-Gothic arches. The earthquake in 2001 caused significant damage to the Darbargadh.

The city's town hall is used for local cultural programs, shows and plays. Recently, a new mall has been built on the aerodrome road which has a food court and a multiplex, along with places for many shops.

Marine National Park is the first marine sanctuary of the country. The forest has various forms of marine life. You will also find a huge variety of birds here.

Khijadia Bird Sanctuary is a perfect representation of the consolidation of a saltpans, seasonal freshwater shallow lake, creeks, inter-tidal mudflats, mangrove scrub and saline land. It is also the breeding point of Little Grebe, Coot, Purple Moorhen, Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Great Crested Grebe and Black-winged Stilt. Here you can spot, raptors, which include harriers, hawks, eagles, and falcons. Martins, swallows, wagtails and a variety of waterfowl are some of the variety of birds which are given sheleter in this sanctuary.

Located north of the city centre, the Cremation Park has statues of deities as well as saints. This park also has depictions of various scenes rom the Ramayana. The’ Circle of Life’ will definitely evoke the though process of the visitor.

Joggers Park is a new botanical garden which is just beside the Palace Ground. It is officially known as Gulab Kunvarbaa Udhyan. It is very mush used for joggers. 

This small palace, on an island in the middle of Lakhota Lake, once belonged to the Maharaja of Nawanagar. This fort-like palace has semi-circular bastions, turrets, a pavilion with guard-rooms housing swords, powder flasks and musket loops. An arched stone bridge with a balustrade connects the Lakhota Palace with the town. Today it houses a small museum. The fort museum has a good collection of sculptures that spans a period from the 9th to the 18th century and pottery found in ruined medieval villages from the surrounding area. The museum is reached by a short causeway from the northern side of Ranmal Lake and is open daily except on Wednesdays.

Bholeshwar Mahadev Temple is located in Gajna village. It is located on the bank of the River Dhandhar and is famous for its fair on Shravani Amas.

Vardhman Shah’s Temple is one of the four major Jain temples in Jamnagar. It is a must visit place. The foundation stone of the shrine was laid during Jam Jasagi I’s rule in 1612. The fifty two really small temples which were built in 1622 interestingly encircle the temple.  

Shantinath Mandir is located south-west of Bedi Gate in Jamnagar. The temple has sophisticated carvings. The walls are ornamented with exquisite murals. These fine murals illustrate the lives of several Jain saints. The floor is made of marble. It is also decorated with idiosyncratic Jain patterns in colours such as black, yellow, red and white.

Mota Ashapura Maa Temple is situated in the eastern part of Jamnagar. It is a very popular temple of the Hindus. Once you are in Jamnagar, do not miss out to visit this temple. 

There are no such typical places for kids to have enjoyment. But the kids will definitely enjoy parks and parks and sanctuaries. The animals there will attract the kids very much.

You also must visit the Bohra Hajira. This is a magnificent structure on the banks of the Rangmati and Nagmati Rivers. 

Bhujio Kotho is very popular among tourists. Built for protection from invasion, it has five floors. On the first floor, you will find guns placed in each direction. It is interesting to note that in the walls, there are holes for rifles. 

During his rule, Jam Shri Ranjitsinhji built the Solarium. It is also known as the Ranjit Institute of Poly-Radio Therapy. It is a slowly revolving tower providing full daylong sunlight for treating skin diseases.

The Kotha Bastion has an amazing collection of coins, sculptures, copper plates,  inscriptions and  the skeleton of a whale. 

The fascinating Willingdon Crescent was built by Ranjit singh. It has arcades of cusped arches, curving walls and parapet. You will find the statue of Jam Saheb in the centre of the crescent.
