The nearest town is Cochin or Kochi. Take a whole day to visit Cochin, a city steeped in history. It is marked by medieval Portuguese, Dutch and English architectural remains. There are many places to see in Cochin.

This synagogue was built in 1568 and then destroyed by the Portuguese in the year 1662. Two years later, the Dutch took over and rebuilt it. The pulpit is made of gold and is ornate. The floor is made of elaborate hand painted, willow patterned tiles from China. The chandeliers are from Belgium and are exquisite. It is topped by a beautiful clock tower.

This palace was gifted by the Portuguese to the Raja of Kochi, in 1555. In 1663, it was renovated by the Dutch and henceforth called the Dutch Palace. It was originally intended as a means to get trading privileges.

The best place to enjoy nature in the area is at the beach. Here you can aimlessly wander around the sandy beaches and simply enjoy the feeling of sand under your feet and the water as it washes over your feet. You can also go swimming in the beach or sunbathe.

This lighthouse was built in the year 1862. The district of Alappuzha was a port and this lighthouse made it one of the busiest in Kerala. It was also one of the most important commercial centres in the state. It is 30 feet tall and the view from top is worth the climb.
