Places to Visit in Munsiyari

This temple is one of the Siddha Peeths, situated 21kilometres from Tanakpur. As per the mythological scriptures, father of Goddess Sati, Daksha Prajapati, organized a sacrificial ceremony here where everyone was invited except Lord Shiva. When Goddess Sati discovered about her father’s intention to humiliate her husband, she immolated herself in the sacrificial fire. Lord Shiva came in very angry and carried back his wife’s corpse, and Purnagiri is one place where one of her body part fell.

You can buy the most famous pashmina shawls here which is also a paradise for shoppers. Darkot is a charming village, only 6 kilometres away. Those who are culturally aesthetic will find pleasure in admiring the craftsmanship of the Kumaon people.

There is an interesting legend attached to this beautiful place, which is just a few kilometres away from Munsiyari. The pond, in its raw beauty, offers an implausible view of the Panchachuli Peak and is itself a wonderful piece of nature.

Masterji or Dr SS Pangthi, a retired school-teacher, traveller and trekker, author with profuse knowledge about the Bhotias of the area, innovatively put together a little collection of antiques in a personal museum at his home town in Nansen Village. Other important exhibits are the authentic documents that facilitated trade between Tibet and Johar Valley and the individual effects of the traders. This place is surely worth a visit.

It is located in the middle of Munsiary town. This Museum has outstanding compilation of rich cultural heritage of the Johari people. The collections exhibit the ancient art and culture, life style, trade, and numerous antiques. There is a segment displaying ancient literature, documents and stamps issued by the Indian government paying respect to the local people. All the exhibits here are adequately explained to the tourists. The entrance fee is Rs. 10 per person.

Also known as the Advaita Ashram, it is said that Swami Vivekananda decided to the transfer the publication office of “Prabuddh Bharat” to Mayawati from Chennai when he visited Almora in 1898. The Ashram is located in a scenic surrounding and draws spiritualists from around the world
