Places to visit in Solang

About 13 kilometres from Solang, Vashisht is a small village on the banks of the Beas river. The village is renowned for its beautiful and ancient temples. The most prominent of them is the Vashisht Temple dedicated to Rishi Vashisht. The other famous temple is devoted to Lord Ram. Vashisht also has Turkish-style public baths which use water from the famous hot water sulphur springs. The water is said to have curative properties and attracts thousands of people who come here to take a bath in the magical water. 

Solang is full of natural beauty and you can participate in activities like camping and hiking to soak in the natural splendour of Solang. You must try the ropeway ride to get beautiful views of the valley and the mountains. 

The Snow Point is the most famous landmark in the Solang Valley. It stretches up to 1.5 km and is very popular worldwide for skiing facilities and a skiing training school run by the Mountaineering and Allied Sports Institute. The biggest attraction of Snow Point is the ski lift or ropeway which goes as high as 3,200 meters. Another popular landmark is the SolangNullah, which is essentially a stream. 

The majority of the population in Solang is Hindu and speaks and understands English. The presence of tribes like Kinnauris and Gujjars can also be felt in Solang. People in Solang are simple, and mostly engaged in farming or tourism related occupations. Dusshehra and Diwali are celebrated with a lot of zest by the locals. Solang is also the location of the annual winter skiing festival called the Alpine Premier League, which attracts a lot of foreign tourists.

Solang is a tiny hamlet, and if you have planned a longer trip you may want to include nearby places in your itinerary. Some of the most famous spots near Solang are Manali (9 km), Jagatsukh (19.6 km), Kullu (39.1 km) and Manikaran (93.1 km). A place which you must visit is the Rohtang Pass in Lahaul-Spiti (74.6 km), which is snow covered throughout the year and offers majestic views of the Himalayas. 

Solang has no gardens or parks; however, there are lush green pastures in Solang where you may take strolls and let children play to their hearts content. If you would like to visit a park nearby, then you should try Van Vihar in Manali, which is about 14.7 km Solang. Van Vihar is a small wildlife park with lovely greenery, tall deodar trees, pathways and benches for your comfort. It would be an ideal spot for a lazy picnic. 

There are no museums in Solang, but you may want to visit the Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery in Manali and see some excellent art exhibits there. 

The temple is located near Jagatsukh about 19.6 km from Solang. This temple is famous for its beautiful architecture and hundreds of brass bells which are hung in the temple. Maa Sharvari is the kuldevi of the erstwhile rulers of Kullu, and considered to be a manifestation of Goddess Durga. The temple attracts thousands of devotees every year.

The Anjani Mahadev temple is located in Solang Village at a place called Burwa, which is 3 km above the ski slopes in Solang. The temple is only accessible by trekking with mules and horses. The temple is famous for its 20 feet tall ice Shivaling, which was discovered here by Baba Prakash Puri 15 years ago. It is also believed that this was the place where Anjani, mother of Lord Hanuman, prayed and meditated. 

There are three Tibetan monasteries in the region, two in the downtown Manali and one in a small village called Aleo. The monasteries provide a peek into the famed Tibetan culture and heritage. You can also buy authentic Tibetan handicrafts and rugs, etc. 

The Naggar castle is located in the Naggar village, 34.7 kilometres away from Solang. This huge structure was built in approximately 15th century, and attracts a lot of tourists because of its grand size and unique architecture. There are several temples near the castle, like the temples of Krishna, Vishnu Temple and Gauri-Shankar. 

The Hidimba Temple is an ancient site amidst the serene surroundings in Dhoongri, about 15.3 kilometres away from Solang. The temple has religious importance too and is dedicated to Hidimba, the Asura wife of Bheema. The structure dates back to 1552 and was built by Maharaja Bahadur Singh. Its unique pagoda-style architecture is adorned by intricate carvings and sculptures.
