Places to visit in Thanedar

Saroga Forest is another place close by which you can visit. It is about 10 km from Thanedar. You may go for a nature walk in the forest and look at the natural flora and fauna or pick up rhododendron flowers on your way.

Nature walks, strolls in the forests, orchards and near the lake are some of the activities you can undertake in Thanedar.

The Saint Mary’s Church and the Param Jyoti Temple are the most important landmarks in Thanedar. Hatu Peak is another natural landmark. Besides these, the most prominent landmark in the village is the Banjara Camps & Retreats, which is popular for providing lodging, treks, hikes and camping trips in the region. 

Thanedar is famous for its fruit orchards and resplendent natural beauty. There are no cultural events which take place in Thanedar, but every year in the second week of November the neighbouring village of Rampur holds a huge event called the Lavi Fair. The 3-day fair is very popular in this area because traders from all over the region gather here to sell their wares. Everything from handicrafts to dried fruits, clothes and livestock are sold in the Fair. The Fair is one of the largest of its kind in Northern India and a major crowd magnet. It is a must visit if you happen to be around during the second week of November. Another Fair takes place every year in the month of June, at the Temple of Nag Devtanear the Tani Jubbar Lake. It’s a major attraction for the people in Thanedar and a lot of handicrafts are sold in the fair.

This charming little wood and stone church was built by British soldiers in 1843 in the premises of Gorton Mission School. The Anglican Church has a rich history and is a symbol of the cultural values of the region. The architecture of the church is markedly neo-classical and simple. This heritage church also features beautiful stained glass windows and a small graveyard at the back. The Saint Mary’s Church holds a very important place in the history of the area.

Barobagh Hill is the highest point in Thanedar. The hillock is the location of the famous Stokes’ House and the Param Jyoti Temple. It has some of the most awesome views too. 

You may also want to visit the Hatu Peak,which is 11,000 feet above the sea level. There is a temple of Hatu Mata on the peak and it offers panoramic views of the Himalayas and adjacent settlements. The forests around Hatu Peak are ideal for bird watching and exploring the natural fauna.

The Apple Orchards are the most obvious natural attraction in Thanedar. A trip to an orchard would be great fun and you can soak in the greenery of the orchard and smell the air heavy with the aroma of apples. If you are a nature enthusiast, then you must visit the TaniJubbar Lake.This charming little lake is situates in the middle of an apple orchard, and will give you the perfect environment for relaxing andunwinding. A perfect spot for a picnic, Tani Jubbar Lake also has a small Nag Devta Temple in close proximity.

There are numerous places in the state of Himachal Pradesh, around Thanedar, which you could visit on your trip. The major tourist destination around Thanedar is Shimla at 80 km. You can also visit Chail about 83 km from Thanedar. Another good option would be Parwanoo and Kasauli which are at 156 and 143 km respectively. If you have time, consider Manali at 196 km and Nalagarh which is 164 km from Thanedar.

Visit the orchards to soak in the greenery of Thanedar. The entire place is like a mini-garden, and you would love to take nature walks with the family.

Shimla, which is a major tourist destination, is a few hours drive away and has some interesting museums like the Shimla State Museum and Army Heritage Museum. 

The children would be delighted to learn about the history and culture of Thanedar. They could learn about the local flora and fauna, and do bird watching in the forests around Hatu Peak. Perhaps the best experience for any child would be to pick apples in the harvest season.

The Ruins of Hira Mahal Palace,the beautiful and more than 200 years old historic palace, was situated in Kumarsain, very close to Thanedar and was a splendid example of architecture. The sprawling palace was however gutted in a fire in 2007, leaving behind a few remnants of its existence.  

This school was established by the British as a part of their garrison after the land was given to them by the rulers of the region in 1943. The school is one of the most ancient structures in the area and is visited by tourists who come to visit the Saint Mary’s Church in its premises. The old buildings of the school are preserved with a lot of care and affection by the mission and are worth taking a look at.

The Stokes’ farm house is located on the Barobagh Hill. The house is also called The Harmony Hall and was built in 1912. This beautiful house made of wood, stone and slate is visited by many who are interested in the history of Thanedar. Stokes’ apple orchard is also at the same place.
