Places to Visit in Trichy

This ancient temple of Lord Shiva has been declared a protected Monument of national importance by The Archaeological Survey of Indian. The temple was built in the Medieval age by the Chola Rulers and is called Malai Kovil or the Hill Temple by the locals.

Children would love a visit to the Anna Science Centre which was established by the Tamil Nadu government in 1999. This planetarium is a popular destination for children and adults alike. The Planetarium is located next to the airport and also features an environment gallery exhibiting themes related Eco systems, Bio diversity and its conservation. Shows at the planetarium are available on all days of the week in Tamil and English. Mukkombu, is a picnic spot and is also known as the Upper Dam. It is located 18 kilometres away from Tiruchirappalli, on the banks of the Cauvery River. The destination features a park and playground that includes a science centre, toy train and boating facilities. The little would also like to go to various parks in the city especially the Gandhi Children’s Park.

Rani Mangammal District Museum is also known as the Government Museum and is the best museum in the city. It has some rare and unique collections of artworks, artefacts and relics. The museum is divided into different sections which cover topics as wide as antiques, archaeology, arts and crafts, ecology and numismatics. This large museum is has a plethora of information and would appeal people interested in history, arts and culture of the state. There are two smaller museums in the city which you may visit if you have time namely the Tiruchirappalli Railway Museum and Aayiram Kaal Mandapam.

Though Trichy has a large number of parks and gardens, the best are the Kallani Park and the Gandhi Children’s Park. They are perfect for spending time with kids in the evening or strolling in the evening breeze. You could also make a trip to the Deer Park and the Elephant Park if you are interested in animals.

If you have interest in the azure beaches then do visit Pondicherry or Puducherry located 207 kilometres away from Trichy. The place is famous for its tranquil and pristine beaches. Also visit Mahabalipuram or Mammalapuram located 291 kilometres from Trichy. Mabalipuram is famous for its temples, beaches and Sarees. The state capital Chennai is 336 kilometres away and is a good destination for beaches, sightseeing, clubbing and shopping.

For nature lovers the Puliyancholai Falls are a must visit in Trichy. This lovely waterfall is situated at the foothills of the Kollimalai Hill. The majestic waterfall and forest around make it an ideal place to spend a day between the tamarind groves and sparkling streams of water. Also include the Kallanai Dam in your itinerary. This scenic place is the location of a 200 year old dam, which is one of the oldest in the region. Mukkombu is a popular tourist spot and full of lush greenery and has a lake. 

Thai Poosam & Chariot Festivals at the Maariamman Temple are very popular in in Trichy. Most of the festivals are celebrated in the months of March and April. Float Festival which is celebrated every year at the Rock Fort is another culturally significant. You could also enjoy Natyanjali during these months. This event is an annual classical Dance festival and is celebrated at the Tiruvanaikkaval Temple. The festivals of Garuda Sevai, Flower Festival, Mohini Alangaram and Vaikuntha Ekadashi are other popular festivals.

Besides the popular tourist attractions and famous temples and churches the other major landmark in Trichy are the Srirangam Island, the headquarters of Trichy Municipal Corporation, Anna Stadium and the Golden Rock Railway Workshop.

ChinnaKadai is a great place to shop for jewellery, apparel and mementos of your trip.  It is also a popular place to eat out and have some bars too. 

The Rock Fort is a famous monument in Trichy. It is situated on an 88 metres tall monolithic hillock which is believed to be 3800 million years old. Rock Fort is also very ancient and dates back as old as 2 billion years. The fort was built by Pallavas rules and was added upon the rulers of the Nayak Dynasty.  There are three temples inside the complex – One of Lord Shiva and two of Lord Ganapathy. The Lord Shiva Temple is grand and has beautiful architecture. The summit of the Fort offers panoramic views of the city which can be enjoyed with the cool breeze up there.
