Places to visit in Muscat

This palace is closely guarded by two different forts, which are Mirani and Jalali. The palace is located where the office of the rulers of Oman is located, which is called the Sultan Qaboos.

This is a huge area of rocks that are green in colour, which contain a special metamorphic rock called eclogite. This rock is around 300 million years old and has been exposed to the surface of Earth, plus had been underneath the crust at a depth of around 70 kilometres.

This is the best area for marble deposit in the city and the rock here is light in color. The marble had started to develop somewhere between 70 and 90 million years ago and because of the pressure of the Ophiolite rock it has changed.

These gates consists of three different doors, including Bab Al Kabeer, also known as the big door, Bab Al Sagheer, also known as the little door and Bab Al Mathaib. All of these gates serve as different entrance points into the city.

These tombs are specially designed in the shape of a circle, which are then lined with even more stones and covered completely with boulders. Most of the tombs date back to the 1st and 2nd century BC.

This garden is a paradise of many endangered species of plants that are preserved here for research, and also for display. The garden covers 425 hectares and is located in Al Seeb near the older Al Khoudh.

You can find Mangrove trees which grow and thrive in salt water conditions a plenty around Muscat. The largest grouping of these trees is located in Al Khiran and it should be definitely visited when visiting the city.

This museum has been open since 1974 and it hosts different exhibitions that deal with the heritage of Oman. These exhibitions include information on arts and crafts, firearms, dhows, trade routes, minerals, agriculture and architecture.

With kids, one of the best and easiest activities to do is swimming. There are many beautiful beach destinations located around the city like Al Bustan Beach and AlQurm beach located in the heart of Muscat where you can take your child to spend some fun filled time.

With the beaches that recede into the Arabian Sea there is plenty of marine wildlife to explore and view around the area. One of the best things to do is to sit on the beach or on a boat and look for the huge sea turtles.

This is the monument that has stood for the longest in the city. The tower depicts the commitment of the Sultanate to modernization and beauty.
