Place's to visit in Split

The famous landmarks of Split are but obvious the Diocletian’s Palace, the Cathedral and Bell tower, the Old Town, the Marjan hill and many more.

The cathedral of St Dominus is a mausoleum for Emperor Diocletian whose remains vanished a year later only to be found in the bones of the Bishop Domnius who was executed by Diocletian himself. The cathedral is built on the eastern side of Peristyle.

A villa designed by Ivan Mestrovic completed in 1939 houses the Mestrovic Gallery with more than 200 of his works. It used to be the summer residence of the sculptor and was officially opened to the public in 1952.

People’s Square is a town hall of the 15th century which is located on the western side of the palace. This hall has an ethnographic museum which was established in the year 1910.

Plitvice, the oldest national park in Southeast Europe and the largest in Croatia is situated here where small group tours can be arranged. Krka Waterfalls, Sibenik and Dubrovnik are places where nature lovers can feast their eyes.

Split can be called one of the major centres of Croatian culture after it was included in the World Heritage Sites released by UNESCO. The literary traditions include names like Marko Marulic and the recent modern day author Miljenko Smoje who talks about the latest developments of modern Split.

The Hvar Island, the Diocletian’s Palace, the Old Split, the Marjan and the Peristyle of the Diocletian’s Palace are some must see attractions of this transition economic city.

The Park Forest in Marjan is a pine forest hill on the western banks with additions like the zoo, beaches and other facilities.

One can visit the Mostar and Medjugorje. There are full day city trips from Trogir or Split to see the old Turkish bridge, the charming Bosnian towns.

There are too many things for kids here in Split. Croatia is a child-friendly destination and there are innumerable kids’ activities to keep children of all ages busy and happy. Access to the beach from all resorts for them to run around freely is the first advantage. A walking tour of the monuments will be of interest to teenagers. They can rent a bike and go on a biking tour to Marjan hill.

A climb of the bell tower of the Cathedral is worth it as it offers a stupendous view of Split both towards the land as well as the sea. The brave-hearts will consider it an achievement to walk up the rickety staircase of the cathedral.
