Monuments

There aren't that many monuments on this island, but one of the oldest cities is located here. The city is called Papeari and it was originally settled sometime during 400 to 500 AD. One of the famous artists from the island, Paul Gaugin, lived in this area.

Lining the island are things called marae that, are stone structures that are huge and are considered sacred. These structures were places of worship and were like temples to the people of the island.

Places to See Around

One of the best things that shouldn't be missed are the trips to the other islands, which are open for exploring and are all smaller than Tahiti. These islands include Moorea, Bora Bora, Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa, and Tetiaroa. You can easily go on a day trip to any or all of these exotic islands.

Municipal Market

This market is located in Papeete and is the largest street market on the island. Here you can find all sorts of handcrafted items and cultural items, along with much more.

Restaurant Jimmy

This restaurant is the perfect place to go for all of the Asian foods and it is one of the best places on the island. Here you can get Chinese, Thai, and even Vietnamese dishes with special dishes as well.

LApizzeria

This restaurant can be found inside a huge gathering of trees and is situated right on the coast. This is the best place on the island for pasta and pizza, and make sure to get a table that is situated outside.

Dishes

There is a huge variety of dishes that are available here and the most popular ones are made with the freshest seafood that can be plucked out of the ocean. Make sure to try the shrimp that is cooked in a curry base, banana and some couscous. It is a delicacy and is of course, delicious.
