Place's to visit in Trincomalee

Apart from the Hindu temples, there are also some Buddhist monasteries popularly known as Viharas to be found in Trincomalee. One is the weligamveheraseruwila raja mahavihara which is known to be a heritage site of Buddhist devotees. Another is the srigajabalenvihara which supposedly has ancient inscriptions in Brahmi. There are two others at Kuchchaveli and Triyaya.

Ancient sites containing the statues of Lord Buddha and exciting caves are also quite popular places of visit for those who shirk the water sports. There is a site known to have limestone statues of Buddha at a sugar farm in kantalai. Another statue of Lord Buddha which is made out of marble is located at a site in Galmetiyawa. Etabendiwawa is a site where the ruins of ancient buildings are to be found. Other sites being Pulmodai and Kuchchaveli where the ancient caves are the special feature.

This Hindu temple is also renowned as the temple of the thousand pillars and a visit to this religious site is must for the people going to Trincomalee. This temple has a shrine attributed to Lord Shiva and festivals like Navratri and Shivaratri are also celebrated in this temple. There are several other temples devoted to Lord Shiva outside Trincomalee in Sri Lanka.

PathirakaliAmman temple is also known as Kali Kovil.Kovil means Temple in Tamil language. This is also a Hindu temple which can be visited.

There are a total of seven hot wells here which is a major crowd puller. Tourists throng this place once they come to know that the water has therapeutic and healing properties. Strangely enough the temperature of each spring is different and the springs have shallow waters within their enclosures. Locals tell stories of an ancient ruler who performed his mother’s last rites here. Therefore, this place is claimed to be a religious site.

This cemetery is maintained by the Sri Lankan government. It is said that this cemetery was made for the British soldiers who lost their lives during World War II.

This fort was earlier known as FortFrederick and stands near the Koneswaram temple. This fort was captured, destroyed and rebuilt a number of times by the Portuguese, Dutch and the French.

Hoods Tower Museum displays war antiquities like guns, artillery etc. It gives tourists a glimpse into the war raging era that affected Trincomalee.

Archaeological Museum displays a Buddha statue and other findings which can make for an interesting visit.

Kids have ample of opportunities for enjoying diving tours which are very well conducted with care and proper gear. Also, kids can have a unique experience watching dolphins and whales. Scuba diving, snorkelling and windsurfing are the type of activities that older kids tend to enjoy here.
