Places to visit in Uganda

Formed in the 1880s, the Kasubi Tombs were the site of the palace as well as the sacred burial grounds of the royal family of the Buganda tribe. This is an important religious and cultural site for the Buganda people and a historic monument of national importance. The place is located on a hill outside the city of Kampala in Uganda and is made of three major sections – the royal tombs, gravesites and other structures, and an agricultural area.

This is the renowned source of the Nile River and is situated almost 50 miles from Kampala at the largest fresh water lake in the world, Lake Victoria. The Nile flows into Egypt, the Mediterranean and Sudan from Jinja. The first European who discovered the source of the Nile was John Hanning Speke in 1862. An obelisk has been erected at the site to celebrate his discovery.

The Uganda Museum was founded in the year 1908 on the outskirts of the city of Kampala and boasts of an amazing anthropological collection. The museum houses a superb collection of musical instruments from East Africa as well as various archaeological specimens. The Zoological Museum at Makerere University contains a vast collection of birds, mammals and rock fossils which are indigenous to the country. The geology department of the university also has collections of natural history which are of great value.
