Places to visit in Vancouver

Before the arrival of the Europeans the First Nation tribes occupied Vancouver and the nine totem poles in the Stanley Park visually represents those days. To prevent weathering the original ones are kept in the museum Robert Yelton, the Squamish Nation artist engraved the newest of them in 2009.

The loggers had come to Vancouver before the Europeans, and this arch in Stanley Park is made with the help of a trunk of an old tree. The original arch stood from 1912 -1947 and was replaced in 1952. The children have fun climbing up and down the arch.

To commemorate the death of the Canadian soldiers in World War I, the Victory Square Cenotaph was built in Victory Square. It is a three sided obelisk with each side facing the three streets: Hastings, Pender and Hamilton. Made out of local gray granite, the monument is 30 feet high and Cenotaph in English means old tomb.

Installed in 1984 to be like the triumphant arches of Rome, the monument’s goal was to raise money for cancer awareness with a Marathon run from New Foundland to British Columbia. The run was never completed but the memorial still stands at the entrance of the BC Palace Stadium.

One of the finest examples of neo-Gothic architectures, this Cathedral was built in 1900 featuring huge stained glass windows, domed ceiling, clerestory windows and eight balls hanging from the east tower.

The oldest Anglican church of Vancouver open was built in 1895 and is preserved as a heritage building.

Designed by Arthur Erickson, this is an award-winning Sikh temple. The temple is a fusion of western and eastern architecture.
