Rumtek Monastery – Located at the distance of 24 km from Gangtok, the Rumtek monastery is the largest monastery in Sikkim. It was built in 1740 originally by 9th Karmapa WangchukDorje but later reconstructed in 1959. It is the home of monks. There are several sacred objects in the monastery. The Golden Stupa is one of the most amazing objects and it contains the relics of the Sixteenth Karmapa

 

Enchey Monastery – This monastery is 200 years old and has retained its original structure till date.

The Enchey monastery is one of the most important monasteries of Sikkim and is situated in a dense wood. This old Buddhist monastery was built during the reign of ThutobNamgyal. The monastery belongs to the Nyingmapa order and about 200 years old. 

The museums are meant to preserve the rich culture and heritage of any place. The art and architecture of the place are retained in these museums. Tourists can visit the local museums and find the historic importance of the place visited. The monasteries in Sikkim speak a volume about the cultural heritage of the state and you can plan the visit to this museum during your visit to Sikkim. Namgyal Institute of Tibetology is the popular Tibet Museum located in Gangtok. It was opened on 1st October 1958.

About two third population of Sikkim is formed by Nepalese and these people follow Hinduism. People here also practice Buddhism and you will find the religious places pertaining to both different faiths over here.

 

Shiva Mandir, Legship – This temple is situated on the banks of the scenic Rangit river. The location of this temple which is also known as KirateshwarMahadev Temple is picturesque. The devotees can reach the temple through the footbridge which is built across the river.

Gangtok is a modern city now and there are restaurants offering world food over here. 9'INE, Taste of Tibet, Kookay Restaurant, Gangtalk, Melting Point, Tangerine, Lotus Bakery and Chopsticks are only a few of the several restaurants that offer mouth-watering dishes.

Clubs and discos usually operate in weekend. If you want the good quality entertainment then those attached to the big hotels may be the best choice. X’Cape is probably the best nightclub of Gangtok and hence it is a must try.

The bars and pubs for an occasional drink can be found at many locations in Sikkim but those attached to the hotels are recommended for the tourists. Pub 25 is a great place to be in.

Flea Markets in Sikkim

There are flea markets in every city and town. The small souvenir shops are there near every tourist spot. Old market, Lal Market and New Market in Gangtok are the popular ones.

Government Handloom and Handicraft Emporium in New Market and on M.G. Marg are good to buy stuffs like masks, Buddhist prayer wheels, silk “tankha” paintings and carpets.
